Nautical Handbooks from Navigation UK

Radar, VHF Radio and Navigation are all covered by our excellent interactive software, but these books are very helpful with their go-anywhere convenience. When you need to read a quantity of text, the crisp print of a book is preferable to reading text on a PC screen. Combine a book with the software for perfect training.

Radar Training Books

Radar operation and collision avoidance are explaned in the compact RYA Introduction to Radar. This book is a primer for the RYA Small-Craft Radar Course. We also offer Tim Bartlett's Radar Afloat, which covers the subject in greater detail. One of these small craft radar books, together with the Radar TutorPlus software, will tell you all you need to know and give you hands-on experience.

VHF DSC Radio for GMDSS

The VHF Short Range Certificate is a legal requirement for unsupervised use of small-craft VHF radio. Our VHF DSC TutorPlus software brings all this to life and provides excellent practice. These two books complete the training system. VHF Afloat is a very easy read, using a pictorial approach with many simulator-generated sequences of operations for you to follow.
The Reeds VHF DSC Handbook offers a greater depth of coverage for those that like to know more than the strict requirement. It is well written and is the most comprehensive VHF book in common use.

GPS and Collision Regs Navigation Books

Principles and practice of GPS navigation on small craft are well described in GPS Afloat. The book was written by Bill Anderson, a highly-experienced yachtsman and former naval officer. He ran the RYA Training Division for many years and his depth of experience shows through in this excellent book.
The Skippers' Pocket Book is a fascinating collection of reminders, tips and techniques to cover every sailing and motor-boating activity. Knots, navigation, communications, boat handling, weather and much more is packed into this handy reference book.

Radar Afloat

This practical guide shows you how to get the best possible picture and how to interpret it. All the major techniques are explained in simple terms and illustrated with dual photos of the chart and radar screen - to help you understand their similarities and differences. Radar Afloat is the perfect introduction to this wonderful aid to navigation and safety..
As an ex-officer in the royal navy, a practising yachtsman and a navigation instructor, Tim Bartlett has been using radar at sea on all types of vessel for more years than he cares to admit. Formerly technical editor of the magazine Motorboat and Yachting, he spends much of his time testing the very latest equipment in small craft under power and sail.

RYA Introduction to Radar

This booklet gives a basic introduction to the subject of small-craft radar, or acts as an aide-memoir for those who have studied the subject. As with the Radar Afloat, it is written by Tim Bartlett, but here working to a quite different brief.
This 31-page booklet covers the main subject-matter of the RYA one day course, but is designed to be used along with additional training. As such, it is a useful companion for those purchasing the Radar Simulator and Plotting Tutorial, where the compact descriptions in the book can be explored in much greater detail in the software.

VHF Afloat

This book is written with a light touch and is clear and easy to understand. It is beautifully illustrated in colour and features computer simulations of DSC procedures. Use it to pass the exam then keep it on board for reference. When you need to make a call, the facts will be at your fingertips.
Sara Hopkinson was a VHF examiner and now trains Short Range Certificate Assessors. She runs her own RYA Recognised Teaching Establishment, is a Yachtmaster Instructor, and a Coastguard Auxiliary

Reeds VHF DSC Handbook

This work is a user-friendly guide that gets marine VHF users quickly up to speed in using both the analogue and digital functions of the radio. Sue Fletcher's straightforward explanations and tips describe the leisure craft VHF DSC radio system in detail and its place within GMDSS. Since it was first published, it has become the standard text on the subject, providing:

  • All the information required to pass the Short Range Certificate (SRC).
  • Useful questions and answers to test your knowledge.
  • A full explanation of GMDSS as it affects leisure craft, including details on EPIRBs, SARTs and Navtex.
  • A valuable onboard reference and handy aide-memoire.

GPS Afloat

The Global Positioning System (GPS) will pinpoint a boat’s position to within a few yards, and give a course to steer to its destination (the waypoint). This book explains how the system works and how to navigate safely and efficiently - in daylight, darkness or in fog.
Bill Anderson spent 13 years as a seaman officer in the Royal Navy, serving as Navigating Officer of a minesweeper, a frigate and a destroyer.
